Sat snugly up in the north of England, between Northumberland, County Durham, North Yorkshire and Lancashire, this rural heaven is becoming one of the most visited holiday destinations in England, mainly due to its containment of the Lake District national park, which has proven great inspiration for many poets, writers and painters over the years.

Officially made in to an English county in 1974, Cumbria is the third largest ceremonial county in England, containing 6 districts in total and a population of 498,800, excluding all the adrenaline junkies and peaceful visitors that flock there each year to enjoy the hills, valleys and lakes of the Lake District.

The six districts are Allerdale, Barrow in Furness, Carlisle, Copeland, Eden and South Lakeland and one of the most famous and visited towns is Keswick, known for its celebrity car museum, film festival and historic market place.

It’s the Lake District and the landscape in general that makes Cumbria an awe inspiring visual spectacle, as the mountains and valleys create a giant wave like pattern across the countryside, that glisten with the many lakes that lay below.

The highest peak in Cumbria is Scafell Pike, which peaks at around a whopping 3210 feet high; in fact the only parts in Britain that are over 3000 feet are situated in the magnificent Cumbrian county.

There are so many activities and things to do in Cumbria you’ll be spoilt for choice, but they usually revolve around outdoor festivals or strenuous activities. These range from rambling, hiking, sailing, biking and picnicking for the more laid back type of person, or mountain climbing, cross country exploring, white water rafting and bungee jumping for the more extreme and adventurous visitors.

For the young children flying kites and visiting the wildlife parks always proves to be a fun time. These parks may prove of interest to all as Cumbria and the Lake District are home to several species of animals that are extinct elsewhere in Britain and even the world. It’s the unique environment that keeps them there.

Because of the diversity in landscape, Cumbria tends to get visitors all year round, who take part in different activities at different times of the year, with something new happening all the time.

Cumbria is unlike other popular tourist destinations, in that it isn’t overrun with hotels and tacky resorts. The best way to experience Cumbria is to rent out a holiday cottage in one of the towns or somewhere more rural and enjoy a real “getting back to basics” type atmosphere. Usually these end up cheaper than other holiday resorts and you may end up renting the place for months once you find out all the fun activities on offer.

Still if it’s all a bit too much for you visiting Cumbria in the summer, renting out a little cottage and relaxing with a picnic every day is just as fin and desirable as anything else on offer. Cumbria truly is the last vintage UK holiday destination.

In other words it is your responsibility to bring food or eat out, as there are no cafeterias or restaurants as part of the deal. If it is a cottage holiday you are after then this probably goes without saying, although some people run them like a bed and breakfast offering food in the morning and sometimes in the evenings.

When organizing self catering breaks you need to weigh up the various other options available, which may include breakfast, half board or full board. From the outset it may appear cheaper to go self catering, but after a few days of eating out you may realize this wasn’t the best option. Alternatively you could pay a lot of money for full board and find out the quality is poor and you could have found a cheaper alternative, possibly by bringing your own food or visiting a local super market (not always practical in rural areas like the Lake District).

A lot of the fun when going on a cottage holiday to places like the Lake District is the self catering. You could visit a quiet local pub and get some homemade style food, or bring your own assortment and have beautiful picnics out in the countryside. Almost all cottages will come with a fridge to keep food items fresh, but it would be a good idea to bring a cooler if you plan on trekking far from the cottage to eat.

One of the main benefits of going self catering is that you can eat when you want without having to get up at a certain time or adhering to a menu. If you’re holiday is going to be action filled then working in your own snacks throughout the day is probably a far better option than using any B & B or half board services. Why not go old school and get a cottage by the sea or river, catching and cooking your own fresh fish?

A lot of people just prefer to do it all themselves, without the bother of interacting with staff or rules. After all it is a holiday and you may be trying to get away from public life.

Self catering may also refer to laundry needs, meaning you may have to bring your own bedding and sheets. During a lot of cottage holidays it may also be your responsibility to keep the cottage clean, utilizing a built in washing machine for your own laundry. Plus it is only common courtesy to leave the place as you entered it. Leaving a cottage in an extreme mess may result in an extra charge.

Self catering is fun, but take a good look at the options available.

There are literally so many great sports, activities and even relaxation techniques in the Lake District you’ll be really spoilt for choice and may have to come back twice to experience the whole lot. There really is something for every one of all ages.

Some of the many sporting activities available in the Lake District are extreme in nature and cater to thrill seekers from all over the world. Being home to some of the most exciting lakes and rivers in the world all types of water sports take place – from death defying white water rafting, to simple sailing. If water’s not your thing but you still love excitement and heart pounding action then rock climbing may be right up your alley (or valley). With many climbing centers and experienced instructors dotted around the region, even beginners can be scaling the mountains in no time.

If you prefer a challenge, but one that won’t have you speeding down rapids and hundreds of miles per hour of dangling from hundreds of feet in the air, then there’s nothing wrong with good old hiking of rambling. There are many marked out trails around the Lake District that can be hiked, walked or mountain biked depending on your preference, and all required equipment can be hired if you don’t have room to bring your own.

It’s not all about physically exhausting activities though. The Lake District is also renowned for its many festivals and shows. Whether its arts and culture, film festivals, music festivals or beer, food and wine tasting events, there will definitely be something more relaxing on to give you a break from reenacting Spiderman on the peaks.

Before you pack up and go home it’s always advisable to visit a local town or village for some cultured food and shopping. Cumbria and the Lake District are home to many independently run boutiques and food establishments that boast the same history as the region itself. This is not a place for McDonalds or Argos (yes there’s a few), but to get that full traditional British feel the small local shops and restaurants should be high on your to do list.

On top of all of this exciting stuff are a whole host of different museums, art galleries, wildlife parks and landmarks that would take almost a lifetime to visit every single one.

No matter what you plan on doing when visiting the Lake District you’ll never run out of inspiration for things to do. And if the worse comes to the worse, then sitting back on a scenic mountain with a bottle of wine and a picnic spread is just as worth the travel as any other activity on offer.

There is no longer a buzz about going abroad and a lot of people are becoming put off by the increasingly populated and dense holiday resorts in the likes of Spain. What used to be secluded, beautiful and exotic beach getaways have become over built and ugly resorts, where you’d be more likely to have a typical English roast dinner than anything new and cultured. It’s this that has opened many people’s eyes to the beauty and fun that can be found on home soil.

Leading the pack in English tourism aren’t any of those overbearing 50 storey hotels, but quaint little cottages that embody the feeling of “getting away from it all.” The idea of a holiday is a break from your normal every day regime and the many cottage holidays available in the UK certainly give you that peaceful and much needed break, as opposed to the hustle and bustle of a packed beach, where your towel is the only free space available.

There are hundreds of different places in the UK you can go to and if there’s something of interest to visit, whether it be a historic market town or region filled with landmarks, there’ll definitely be cottage holidays to accommodate you. Some of the places rising in popularity in regards to cottage holidays include Devon, Northumberland, Cornwall and the cities of Oxford and Cambridge for their history and architecture.

Without a doubt the most popular cottage holidays in the UK come from the Lake District and with very good reason. This spectacular region in England offers a unique blend of fun and exciting activities with beauty and relaxation. The breathtaking sites of sprawling mountains and sparkling lakes were formed over thousands of years of glaciations, where ice slowly created waves in the landscape. This makes it perfect for those that simply want to admire the view, or for those that want to use the view for climbing and extreme water sports. Hell why not do both to fully complete the holiday experience?

Cottage holidays vary in price, but are usually cheaper than most other types of holiday. You can opt to go through a large company, which owns many cottages or you can do it the old fashion way and find somebody who independently rents out their cottage during the summer or winter months for a more personal feel. Unlike other resorts that have rows of identical holiday homes or hotels, no cottage is the same and each will have its own English charm to it. Part of the fun when going on cottage holidays is choosing the location and cottage, but make sure you choose one large enough for your party.

Whether you are looking for a location deep and secluded in the countryside, right near the sea or on the border of a town, cottage holidays offer all the options you want for a satisfying holiday break.

And if it becomes too quiet, there’s always the option of taking up one of the many outdoor sports available in this unique region of the UK.

Centered in the district of Allerdale, Keswick town is one of the most picturesque towns in Cumbria and all of England, offering the traditional buzz from the local market place (renowned for its cheese) and giving easy access to the Derwent Water and Bassenthwaite Lake for those that want to experience the beauty and thrill of the lakes in the Lake District.

For those that avoid Keswick, thinking it’s just a secluded town with little action, think again. Not only does it link to some of the most exciting places in the Lake District (making it ideal for cottage holiday makers), but it also hosts its own series of activities. Each year thousands of paying visitors flock to Keswick for the renowned film festival, showcasing some of the rawest talent from not just England, but from all around the world.

For those that like good music and good home brewed British beer then their annual Beer and Jazz festival may be on your calendar. Just make sure you have a designated driver, because if you sample all 200 of the vintage ales, ciders and lagers, it may be a struggle to actually leave Keswick once you get there.

That’s not it though, not only can you watch blockbusters in the making, sip some real homemade ales and listen to some quality music, but you can also get a taste of celebrity life, when you visit Keswick’s “Cars of the Stars Motor Museum.” This golden building houses some of the finest automobiles used by celebrities in TV and film. There are bound to be a few cars that you recognise.

It’s true that when you go on a cottage holiday to Keswick you may not even experience any of the Lake District and still have a good time, although that would be doing your vacation justice. Once you’re done exploring the fruits of the town, be sure to visit the real Lake District and its landscape. Whether you want a relaxing boat ride or walk along the countryside, or want to go mountain climbing and white water rafting the Lake District offers it all.

No other place in the world offers such a unique experience and contrast between beauty and sporting danger. It is renowned for its picturesque countryside, frequented by tourists who usually stay in quaint little Cumbrian cottages. Cumbria offers a lot of activities for tourists, whether it is long peaceful walks around the Lake District or something more extreme like riding the rapids or climbing rocks and cliffs. And if all gets too much you can just sit back and enjoy the scenery.

Booking holiday cottages in Cumbria is a hassle free process with many travel agents and brochures offering great deals. There is rarely a chance of all the cottages and travel hotels getting fully booked, because although it is a tourist hot spot, it still remains quiet and secluded.

If you live in England, getting there couldn’t be easier either. You can simply decid to drive there by car yourself (although this isn’t always recommended for less advanced drivers), or you can use one of the many well equipped train services, with few change overs. Depending on where you live you can also travel by sea, across Heysham and Newcastle.

Cumbrian cottages sometimes are older style , but that’s all the fun of the holiday. Getting back down to nature and life’s basics. There are specific holiday cottages in Cumbria positioned close to the lakes and various resorts that can accommodate even the largest group, or further inland you can find regular Cumbrian cottages, lodges and hotels. We prefer the Cumbrian cottages closest to the Lake District, which you can find near the northern and southern lakes, as well as the various valleys and right up to Hadrian’s wall on the border to Scotland.

When visiting Cumbria there are a few sights that you must see to make the holiday truly complete. Whether you’re an eager and sporty type, or the kind that likes to relax you can’t miss out on the opportunity to go on a walking/climbing expedition around the Lake District’s peaks. You also have to check out the many designated trails (try not to wander for safety reasons). Another point of interest is the ancient stone circles (fifty in total) that can be fun to look and read about, and you may even want to engage in some spiritual activities. There are various maps that can help you find them all.

Cumbria is definitely for everyone, so if you are looking for some peace, coupled with some fun back to nature activities then holiday cottages in Cumbria sound like they are for you.

It has firmly become a part of our National heritage, famous for its mountainous views, its beautiful lakes, its rich history, pubs and wildlife as well as its association with literature and art.

All land in England higher than three thousand feet above sea level lies within this National Park, making it ideal for a vast number of outdoor activities. As you will see below, there is something for everyone - deciding what to do first may be your biggest challenge.

Walking/Hiking

The Lake District is frequently voted the UK`s favourite choice in destination for walking. Whether it be a relaxing lakeside ramble, a determined mountain walk or even a high-level traverse you`re after, you will certainly find it here. Whether you choose to explore the guides of William Wordsworth or Alfred Wainwright, or even amble from Windermere to Beatrix Potter`s Hill Top Farm, walking around the beautiful lakes of Rydal Water, Grasmere and Tarn Hows, remains one of the best ways to explore this area.

Mountain Biking

The Lake District offers some challenging yet stunning off-road terrains for mountain biking though the routes you take should depend on your experience and fitness levels as the gradients can be extreme. Beginners can join a number of clubs where they can enhance their skills in balance, braking, descending and ascending and in the right places – a typical route might be from Troutbeck, East of Windemere, to Ullswater, with a handy pit-stop at one of the many welcoming pubs in the area. The Roman roads that can still be seen in parts of the Lake District; make excellent trail guides though it is worth taking advice from experienced riders who know the area well.

Canoeing

With large tranquil lakes to exciting white waters, the Lake District is surely one of the most diverse places in the UK to try out canoeing. There are many canoe operators with the region, offering group activities to family day experiences on the water and with professional guides available, canoeists can be assured that they are in capable hands.

Kayaking

Kayaking beginners will require instruction prior to being let loose on the unpredictable waters of the Lake District. Structured lessons are available from a number of activity centres where basic skills in sea kayaking can be learned on some of the great lakes. White waters depend on rain and snowfall but there are a number of challenging routes along the river Eden between Lazonby and Armathwaite weir though a sound local knowledge of the river will be required for safety reasons.

Climbing

From absolute beginners to the risk-taking fanatics of rock climbing, the Lake District has a variety of challenges for anyone all year round. The mountains, known as fells, reach heights of up to 3210ft at Scafell Pike – the highest in England and the area is rich in slate, granite, limestone, sandstone and Borrowdale volcanic rock, all with many excellent bolt protected routes. There are a number of rock climbing clubs and societies that offer instruction for climbers of all experience whether it be for an individual challenge or a weekend group activity.

The Lake District is home to several large outdoor activity programmes where experienced and knowledgeable experts can guide you through the most challenging routes. Whilst reputable companies will insist on correct safety measurements, anyone going it alone should be wary too. Always inform someone on the route you plan to take and the time you intend to return, and invest in the correct safety clothing for the activity you will be taking: life jackets, helmets, arm and wrist bands, sound footwear and approved safety equipment in the case of more dangerous activities such as ropes for climbing. Because of its unique landscape of mountains, valleys and lakes, the Lake District offers loads of different water sports, climbing and water activities.

For the young and active there are a lot of physically grueling sports to try. These range from rock and mountain climbing, to white water rafting, sailing and mountain biking.

For the hundreds of older people that book secluded Lake District Cottages further North there is still ample things to do, from relaxing in the countryside to long scenic walks through the valleys and along the many designated trails. Instead of going 60mph down a volatile river why not have peace and quiet on a lake cruise?

For younger children that may not be old enough to take up any physical activities, but are still full of beans you may want to take them around one of the wildlife parks or aquariums to see some of the animals that are only thriving in the Lake District such as the Red Squirrel.

There any many other places to visit that people of all ages can enjoy including museums, pottery plants and art galleries.

When booking holiday cottages Lake District or otherwise there are several things to take in to account. You need to decide on the area you want the cottage to be. This may sound obvious but not all brochures make it clear how close you are to certain activities that you may want to undertake. It’s all good being close to Hadrian’s Wall, but it’s not necessarily close to the lakes. Secondly you need to consider whether you want to go self catered, bed and breakfast or full bored and lodgings. The majority of cottages are rented out with no extras at all, so you may want to take a good amount of food if you choose not to eat out. Unlike a lot of holiday resorts the Lake District is not full of restaurants, although you may come across so gorgeous pubs out in the sticks.

If you are looking for sun sea sand and sangria then the Lake District isn’t for you. But if you want to experience the best natural beauty that UK has to offer then the Lake District and Lake District cottages should be high on your list.

Nestled nicely in to the county of Cumbria, the Lake District is one of the northernmost parts of England, close to Scotland.

Being northern the Lake District is extremely hilly, boasting several famous peaks, the highest being Scafell Pike. One of the Lake District’s many attractors are mountain climbers and ramblers, looking to scale the amazing natural landscape.

Still the Lake District is not to be confused with the Peak District. The main attraction of the Lake District is un-ironically its lakes. There are over 20 major lakes in the area, not mentioning the many smaller ones all offering their own activities. Many water sports take place including canoeing, sailing and white water rafting on the more volatile stretches of water.

As well as climbers and water sport fanatics, the Lake District also attracts hundreds of animal and nature lovers every year due to its unique wildlife. There are certain species that are completely unique to the Lake District and not found anywhere else in the UK. These include the red squirrel and the only pair of nesting Golden Eagles. The lakes themselves also house lots of rare and endangered species of fish.

Holiday cottages in the Lake District tend to be the main choice of residence for visitors and holiday makers to Cumbria. Unlike other tourist resorts the Lake District hasn’t been overrun with hotels and cheap resorts and most people rent out old and traditional cottages, adding to the experience. To get the best experience we recommend going closest to the lakes and valleys when looking for holiday cottages in the Lake District. This allows you to be closest to the nature and right next to any activities that you may wish to undertake during your trip.

Holiday cottages in the Lake District vary in price according to their size and the size of your party. You can get late bargains as cheap as a few hundred, or book a head and get one of the more luxurious cottages for as much as £1000. The Lake District is still the busiest during peak season in the summer, although you are never likely to be turned away like you would a foreign resort in Spain. More and more British people are beginning to notice the beauty on their own soil and are opting to spend their summer holidays at home. The Lake District is one of the main choices for national holiday makers, and rightfully so. Cumbria offers many great activities that you simply wouldn’t find elsewhere abroad.

Neatly positioned in between County Durham, Yorkshire and Lancashire, Cumbria and the Lake District are a site of unique natural Spendor. Its many peaks, valleys and lakes were formed after thousands of years of melting and freezing water molding the landscape in to solid sea like waves. Over the years the dips became valleys and lakes, and the tips became mountains and hills.

Many people flock to the Lake District for different reasons. Whether it’s to enjoy the wildlife and the last family of red squirrel, to climb and ramble the many hills and mountains, or to take part in water sports and sailing, the Lake District offers something for everyone, even if you just want to sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery.

Cottage holidays in Lake District areas are affordable for the individual and the family and offer a far different experience from staying in hotels or modern resorts. There’s nothing better than the feeling of entering nature and staying in a old and traditional cottage out in the countryside near the lakes.

When booking a typical cottage package for your holiday there are several variables to take in to account.

The Region...

Depending on the season you should have the opportunity to select whether you want to stay in the North, South or Western Lake areas, in the valleys or closer to Scotland and Hadrian’s Wall. If you are looking for more activities then it is better to book a cottage closer to the lakes.

The Party Size...

How many people come on the holiday may obviously dictate the size of cottage (and therefore the price), but even if you are willing to squeeze in a smaller cottage it may still cost more.

Duration...

Most packages range from a few nights to three weeks.

If you look for last minute bargains you can get prices as low as £20 per night, per adult.

Cottage holidays Lake District wishes you an enjoyable holiday.

Up in the north of England, bordering parts of Scotland, Cumbria is perhaps one of the most beautiful places in England – home of the every famous Lake District.

This scenic, picturesque county has inspired countless books, paintings and poetry due to its beauty and you really haven’t seen Britain unless you’ve scaled the peaks, rambled the walks or at least picnicked in the marvellous countryside of Cumbria and the Lake District.

Holiday Cottages Cumbria:

If you intend to get the full experience when visiting Cumbria, you have to hire out some Cumbria cottages. Depending on your party’s size you may be able to get away with just one, or you made need several. This is because some Cumbria cottages tend to be very small, only accommodating about three people. (Unless of course you don’t mind squishing together or sleeping on the floor). If you really want to be at the heart of nature getting a cottage close to one of the lakes is a recommended route to take.

Activities:

There is no problem with taking long peaceful walks along the country trails or sitting back and relaxing in the summer sun by some beautiful greenery, but Cumbria offers a wealth of other activities that require a little more effort, but are probably just as much fun.

Why not go extreme and tackle nature head on by visiting a white water rafting center? With fully qualified instructors you could soon be hurtling down a violent stretch of water at 50 miles per hour, with nothing but human will and a boat ore. Maybe climbing takes your fancy. If so there are hundreds of great rocks and cliff faces to scale and abseil down in the heart of the Lake District. Cycling is also a popular hobby of Cumbrian regulars. The many trails and off road routes can be enjoyable and also great if you are an exercise buff. Bassenthwaite is a typical Lake District village with many quaint cottages. The festival is set in and around the village, with the focus of activities and entertainment on the village green. Whilst it was a record turn-out for the scarecrows, the visitor numbers were low due to the typical Lakeland weather of heavy showers and strong winds throughout the week-end. However, many people still turned out and a great time was had by all. Below are a few of our favourite scarecrows.
